Case Study

IAQ Services helped a Luxury Hotel reduce high energy costs and noise levels

Project Overview

IAQ Consultancy Services was invited to conduct a survey at a city centre luxury hotel to investigate noisy fan operation in three canopies, three phase fans and associated duct work.

The IAQ team found that the fans in the hotel were being controlled by a single non-operational switch and a three-phase fuse which were in constant operation at full speed, resulting in high energy costs and noise levels.

We were tasked with installing the required number of inverters to create individual fan controls and replacing the single switch.

The Challenges

The Engineering Manager informed us that the high noise levels were negatively impacting staff members and so the replacements needed to be fitted as quickly as possible.

However, the lack of fan control and very limited void space brought many challenges. The fitting of alternative fans was not an option and we also had to mindful of the availability of the kitchen with flexible closing times.

Our Solution

After our initial investigation, we decided the best course of action was to install three inverters and replace the single phase on/off switch. An inverter is an apparatus which converts direct current into alternating current. It can also be responsible for controlling speed and torque for electric motors. Installation of the inverters allowed the hotel to control the fans individually and therefore better manage the costs and noise level.

“The fans were currently being controlled by a single non-operation switch and three-phase fuse – resulting in high energy costs and noise levels.”

The Results of our Work

As a result of increased fan optimisation kitchen fan speeds were reduced by 50% and fan operation times cut from 24 hours a day to just 12. Not only did this immediately reduce energy consumption and noise levels, but the client was also able to actively reduce costs and decrease carbon footprint.

“Instead of fans running 24/7, they now operate for just 12 hours a day. We’ve drastically reduced noise and cost levels as a result”

Our Recommendations

In an environment where there are high levels of noise or costs due to fans, we’re happy to provide bespoke solutions to complex plant issues on-site. In this case, inverters enabled staff to have full control over the speed, time and therefore costs of equipment, making for a much-improved workspace environment.
